Michael’s Goals
He is looking for big ways to address issues his company faces among geographically diverse nursing homes.
Michael is the Vice President and Director of Human Resources of a provider of nursing home facilities. The son of first-generation immigrants to the U.S., Michael preaches about the values of honest hard work in order to succeed. Through steely determination and practical knowledge, Michael has duly earned his college and graduate school degrees. He has worked up through the ranks to his current place in the large healthcare system that employs him.
Michael’s employer operates over 55 nursing home facilities located in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. Several weeks ago, he discovered that a union started placing business agents in the employee parking lots of their properties, handing out flyers. They are trying to stir up issues regarding staff hours and accusations of hiring undocumented workers, etc. At one of the properties, an employee has been accused of stealing pharmaceuticals. Though the employee was disciplined and surprisingly still has his job, this guy started talking to a lot of co-workers about organizing. This issue has become the springboard that exposed many other issues under the surface.
Now Michael finds himself in a debacle, as he has received a petition of an impending election to unionize, in accordance with the National Labor Relations Act. The executive team is pressuring Michael to take bigger action in order to rein in these ‘ungrateful’ employees and make sure that the union doesn’t get any more of a foothold than it already has. He’s frightened that he will lose his job if the facilities go union, and needs to act quickly to find an advocate that will help keep things running as they are.
